Railway : Belval - Schifflange

arbed railway

This line makes a connection from the ARBED location Belval and the ARBED location Schifflange. Part of this line existed already for a longer time as a factory owend line from the blast furnace in Esch-Belval to the dump of iron slack, that are the rests of the process of making iron out of ore (see on the map above the area called "Crassier d'Ehlerange". This area was situated north of the Belval works, north of the motorway which passes Esch-sur-Alzette today. Plans to make a connection between Belval and Schifflange existed for a long time. Already in 1920 there was a plan to make such a line. But it never was carried on.

But in 1991 there was made a connection from this area alongside the motorway north of Esch-sur-Alzette to the northern side of the Esch-Schifflange works. As the blast furnace in Schifflange was closed and in Belval stil was working, the line would give a connection with trains of a torpedo wagon with liquid iron in it. The line did not exist for a long time. Because of changed production facilities, the line was closed around 2001.
