Diesel trains series 628

Description

In a series of 63 diesel multiple units which the German railways ordered from 1992 on, the CFL ordered two of them to be owned by the CFL. They were built in the year 1994. They are equiped with thyristors. On coach is a motor wagon, the other is a coach with no motors. In the beginning the colour was white and blue/green, in the year 2001 they have been repainted in a red colour (the same as the DMU's of the German Railways.

Both part of the articulated DMUs are numbered different. The part with motors is numbered in the series 628, the trailer is numbered in the series 928.

They were used in a pool of the same trains in Germany in the region of Kaiserslautern and Trier. From 2008 on only in the region Trier. They were in use for the Inter Regio trains on the line from Luxemburg to Trier in Germany and incidentally also on other lines Luxemburg, expecially for a year on the line Luxemburg-Kleinbettingen.

The reason to use diesel trains on a fully electrified line is because there are two systems of voltage, the German 11 kV and the Luxemburg (French) 25 kV. To achieve only two trains for both systems was in 1994 not possible and would be too expensive.
