Diesel loc series 1800

Description

In 1962 the CFL ordered a series of 8 heavy diesellocs, meant to replace heavy steam locs. The Belgian firm La Brugeoise et Nivelles (BN) was chosen of many manufacturers. This type of loc is based of the American loc type G16 of General motors, of which many were built in the USA. To be honest, the loc is also based on the 10 years earlier delivered CFL series 1600.

The motor is the same as in the series 1600, but because of a turbo loader the power was raised to 1800 hp. Of the same series also 42 locs were built for the Belgian railways as the series 5500. The Belgian locs enter the country of Luxemburg, as the CFL locs are going as far as Liège and Arlon in Belgium.

After delivery of the 8 locs, the CFL was able to abandon all steam locs. Later, in 1963 the CFL ordered for 12 more of the same locs.

Locs 1801-1804 and 1815-1820 were equipped with a kettle for steam heating of coaches. These locs weigh 114 tons instead of 110 tons of the other locs.

The locs were used in goods trains as well in passengers trains. They come as far as Liège, Montzen (at the Belgium-German border near Aachen), and Stockem (near Arlon) in Belgium.

Because loc 1802 was incidentally used for a trip of railway fans from Luxemburg to Blankenberge (at the Belgian North See coast), this loc was in 1979 given the name "Blankenberge". Later on, more locs have been named.
