Tongeren - Lanaken

Several plans for tram lines in these surroundings between Tongeren, Glons, Basenge, Visé, Riemst, Lanaken, Maastricht passed in the years between 1885 and 1894. First plans were to make a line from Tongeren to Lanaken over Riemst, with a branch from Riemst to Visé. Thoughts of another line, from Glons to Maastricht over Riemst made that the plans were changed. There came two capitals, one for Glons-Bassenge-Maastricht (cap.51) and one for Tongeren-Riemst-Lanaken with branch Riemst-Visé. In 1890 the plans changed another time, because there were too many difficulties with the local commonities. The branch from Riemst to Visé was cancelled.

The new plan was to make the line from Tongeren to Maastricht via Riemst (and not to Lanaken). But the community of Tongeren did not agree with this. So the plans remained to create the line from Tongeren to Riemst and then further on to Lanaken. The line Tongeren-Lanaken was opened in 1897.
