Companies

From the beginning of the tram era, there was a dividing in building a tramline and in running the line. The building was done by the NMVB. The rolling stock was also bought by this company.

The daily exploitation was given to private companies. Many companies did only run one line of the network. But others did run several lines, so forming a small network on its own.

After world war I the situation changed dramatically. The network and the position of rolling stock was bad. Many renewals were necessary. Beside this, it was a time when bus companies started running everywhere. For the private companies it appeared to be too difficult to make enough earnings. Many did not survive, or were eager to stop theexploitation. From about the year 1920 exploitation of almost all lines were taken over by the NMVB itself.
