Capitel 46: Bruxelles - Sterrebeek - Vossem

Already in 1883 there was a plan to make a tram line from the Place Madou in Brussel to Evere (cimetary). For this a privately owned tram company was created. But some years later the NMVB was there, and plans for the line were given to the NMVB. Prolongation to Sterrebeek and further on were made. In 1990 approval was given to create the line.

Financing (section Brussel-Evere-Sterrebeek): 800.000 franc (state: 200.000, province Brabant 200.000, communities: 371.000, private persons: 29.000)

When creating the line, it appeared that the section Place Madou to Place Saint-Josse would have a too steep gradient, so this part was not created. Starting point of the line would be the Place Saint-Josse.

The line from Brussel to Evere cimetary was operated with electric trams from the beginning, the section from Evere to Sterrebeek with steam trams.

In the first period, the line was run by the ch.de fer Ixelles-Boendaal, from 1899 by the Brussel local tramways, from 1902 on by the CFV.

For the section from Sterrebeek to Vossem was asked permission in 1893. But the minister of state refused this because by this there would be a direct connection from Brussel via Vossem to Leuven, and that would be in competition with the railway line. But after several attempts in 1896 permission was given, after which in 1897 that section could be opened.

Financing (section Sterrebeek-Vossem): 380.000 francs (105.000 state, 95.000 province Brabant, 180.000 local communities).
