In Leuven there existed from 1874 a horse tramway (rails with 1435 mm track width). The local governement of the city of Leuven decided to change exploitation from horse tramway to electric tram. So in 1912 the consession of the horse tramway was withdrawn. Parts of several lines radiating from the city were included in the city network of electric trams, for which the NMVB itself was running the exploitation. The NMVB had started already in 1906 with plans to make the city network, but only in 1912 the electric trams became effective. In the first years the electric lines were run by the TL (Tramway de Louvain), the same company as was running the horse tramway. In 1920 exploitation went to the NMVB.
