Rolling stock : Steam locomotives

Back to list of rolling stock
stock list steam locs by type
stock list steam locs by number

The steam locomotives of the NMVB were divided into "types". Starting with type 1 until 3; The type 1 was the smallest, type 2 somewhat larger, type 3 a heavy loc. Later on, other types came to it. At last the type-numbering came to type 23.

Because of the fact that there was a nationwide organisation of the NMVB, they could acuire rolling stock in large numbers. This stock was placed on different lines of the different managers. Because of the standardisation, of some types a large number was buidt; Of the type 4 even 390 locs have been build. The total number of locs came to 998 steam locs in Belgium.

The division into types does not imply, that the numbering of locs is from 1 going up for each type. When ordering a certain type, of course the numbers were after each other. At a next ordering of another type the locs of that other type became the next numbers. When after a few year more locs of the first type were ordered, then the locs became the next numbers, so leaving a gap in the numbering of the same type. When looking to the numbers you can see the year of building of the loc; an low number means a old loc, a higher number implies a later build. The numbering was from 1 (the oldest steam loc) with some gaps in the numbering, until almost 1100.

Below you find a table with the number of locs that has been built, for the three track-widths and the total number of locs.

Rolling stock : Autorails

Back to list of rolling stock
      stock list autorails

The first years

When in the beginning of the twentier years there came the motor-bus, the NMVB found it was necessary to do something against it. A means of transport was wanted, which was fast and flexible. The last thing cannot always be said of a steam loc. Such a locomotive must be prepared long before it goes to ride. And when a loc is not neede for an hour or two, the water in the kettle must be kept on temperature. This is expensive because coal is needed and personel must be available.

To abandon these disadvantages, the NMVB in the begin of the years '20 entered into service the first "autorail". To be honest, it was a bus on rail-wheels. The first autorails were so much lookalike as a bus, that there was only a drivers seat on one side, and not on the back side. A disadvantage of this was, that these autorails had to be turned around on the terminus. Sometimes there was a turntable or rails in the form of a triangle, but many times these possibilities were not available. To get rid of this problem there were autorails with a mechanic fitted under it, with which the coach could be lifted and turned by the personal of the autorail, this without a turntable.

Later (begin years '30) the NMVB started building two-directional coaches. These coaches can best be looked after as tram-coach with on both side a driving cab. The (petrol) engine was situated under the floor. Later there followed also autorails with a diesel motor or with a diesel-electrical engine.

Rebuilding to ART

After the second world war the NMVB needed motor power for goods trams as replacement for the old steam locs. To get this power, many of the old autorails were rebuild (sometimes also made heavier) to tractor (the number got the letters ART before the number, instead of the letters AR standing for the number of autorails). Also after the war some new tractors were built.

The numbering of the autorails was from AR 1 until AR 300. That there are more numbers than there were autorails built (248) is because it happened more than once that a autorail was rebuilt so heavily, that a new number was introduced for it. When a autorail was rebuilt from autorail to tractor, then normally the same number was used; only the letters AR were replaced by ART.

Today

Some of these autorails can be seen today on the line to the grottes of Han and on the museum line of Erezee.

Below there are some examples of autorails.

Autorail 1 of the line Marbehan - Florenville - St.Cecile. The first autorail of the NMVB, built in 1924. To make turning at the terminus possible, there was a equipment to lift the autorail and turn it by the personel of the autorail.

Autorail 3, also a one-way autorail, but now in the something more modern form of a tram coach, as will be seen later with the two-way tram-cars.

Autorail 37, built in 1933 in the central depot of Kuregem, in the form as we will se later more. The motor still was a petrol-motor. The autorail is now built with a cabin on each side; it can drive in two directions.

Rolling stock : Diesel locs

Back to list of rolling stock
      stock list diesel locs

With the NMVB there have only been three diesel locs.
One of it was used in the province of Limburg in the years before the second World War.
The other two locs were achieved second hand in the eighties, that was in the time when the pre-metro in Charleroi was built.

Rolling stock : Electric motor coaches

Back to list of rolling stock
      stock list electric motor coaches

In 1898 the NMVB started with electrification of the line from Brussel to Ukkel Kleine Hut. By and by more electric lines were taken into operation. At first in the towns, and after the second world war also on other lines. Of cource the number of electric motor coaches was in cinc with the number of lines. The first motor coaches were two axle coaches. From about 1920 on it was normal to build four axle coaches.

The electric motor coaches were numbered in the series from 9.000 until 10.499, later also from 41.000 until 41.011. The electric stoc is too divers to show that all here.

The stock of the electric motor coaches can be devided into some larger series as below:

The first electric trams.

These were two axle trams, with in the beginning still open balconies. Small and with little comfort. They were used on several city lines.

to top of page

Type two axle coach.

Between 1910 and 1913 about 300 two axle coaches were taken into operation of a type with some more comfort than of that described above. They were also used in city lines.

to top of page

Type wooden Standard.

In the years '20 a large number of four axle coaches (with wooden body) were built. The comfort and riding capacities of the old two axle stoc was too bad to go on with this. Another reason was, that som lines outside the towns was electrified, for which the capacity of the old two axle stock (motor capacity and number of seats) was too small. SO a heavier type of tram was needed, which could acquire higher speed, and which were able to pull one or more not-motored coaches.

to top of page

Type Standaard

In the years '30 it became possible to build motor coaches of which the body was created of metal plates. At first moulded, but later also welded. The outside of these metal coaches was much the same as the older wooden coaches.

to top of page

Type PCC

In 1950 a small test series of PCC-cars was introduced. The result was bad, especially on the long lines outside the towns. Therefore no more were build.

Because it was a small series of trams, they were sold in 1960 to the tram of Belgrado.

to top of page

Type N

Just before the second world war the NMVB started to rebuild on the bottom of an old two-axled motor coach with a new, metal body. They were build by the NMVB depots between 1934 and 1949, and used on many lines in towns.

to top of page

Type S

From 1953 on still more old wooden coaches of the type "Standard" were rebuild. But now the rebuilding was very thorough. Only the bottom remained th same. A new, metal body and new boogies, so that a new, four-axled coach was created. The type S could be seen until the years '80 in service around Charleroi. A small number can be seen even today as working coach.

to top of page

Type SO

As the coast line was operated with one-way stock, for this line a series was rebuild, very lookalike as type S, but now with only one driving cabin. To make it possible for the conductor to go during the ride from one coach to another, at the backside a door was created. The type SO could be seen until the years '80 on the coastal line.

to top of page

Articulated trams

After a long time of uncertainty, and with plans to withdraw the total network of the tram, in the years '70 it came out that the coastal line and some lines around Charleroi would remain. As the type S and type SO coach was outdated, and had a bad comfort, new stock was ordered. Two series were built, both lookalike to each other. The one type was built as two-way tram for the network of Charleroi, the other as one-way tram for the coastal line. This stock can be seen today on both lines.

Rolling stock : Trailers at the steam tram

Back to list of rolling stock

Already in 1885, at the time of the first steam tram, also trailers were bought. The NMVB made standard measures for them. A two-axle coach was long 5,7 meter, broad 2,4 meter and had an axle distance of 1,8 meter.

There were coaches first class (with 16 seats) and coaches second class (with 24 seats). Short after the begin also mixed coaches with first and second class were build. Soon, in 1891, it came through, that the balconies of the coaches were too small; it lasted too long in time to go in or out the coach. Because of this reason the NMVB gave new dimensions for the standard coach, now 6,8 meter length, with a axle distance of 2,4 meter.

Apart from these standard coaches there were also build several coaches of a different type, mostly as two-axle coach, but some times also as four-axle coach.

For the line along the see coast and for some other touristical lines, there were also built open coaches. As there is no lost place for walking space in the middle of the coach and for the balconies, there could be seated 26 persons in these open coaches.

Below there are some examples of coaches for the steam tramway.

One of the first coaches, in this case a mixed coach first and second class. The balconies are somewhat larger than at the very first coach.

to top of page

One of the coaches as were built later on in large numbers. Here with open balconies, but anyway with somewhat more comfort than theat of the first coaches.

to top of page

A two-axle coach, one of the type that was built from 1895 until 1923 in large quantities. The balconies are closed now, the comfort was also a little better than that of the above mentioned coaces.

to top of page

An open coach, with two axles. This type was buid from 1906 on for the coast line, for the line to Spa and for the line to the grottes of Han. When good weather it was a pleasure to ride in these coaches on the touristical lines.

Rolling stock : Trailers at the electric tram

Back to list of rolling stock

At the introduction of the electric tram, some coaches of the stam tram were used. But soon it found out, that it was better to order specific coaches for the electric motor trams. Electric brakes and other modern things could be better used in this way.

In the past there were also a lot of electric motor coaches who were rebuilt to coach. When the motoric capacity was too small, or when the motor was outdated, it often was good possible to use the body of the coach itself as a coach behind the motor-tram. There have been seveal forms of rebuilding, where a new body was build on existing wheels of an olderly tramcoach.

Below you can see some examples of coaches for the electric tram.

A example of a coach, rebuilt from a two axledd coach of the steam tram. It was built in 1908. In 1923 on the old boogie a new body was built as coach for the electric tram.

to top of page

On the same moment as rebuilding of electric motor coaches to the type Standard, there were also rebuilt a lot of coaches with a body lookalike to the motor coach.
Here you can see an example of a tram type standard with belonging four axled coach on boogies.

Another cach of the type standard. It was fitted on boogies.

A coach of the type S, used until the years '80 on lines at the coast and in Hainault.
In the depot of Jumet (near Charleroi) some type S coaches were rebuilt to make them usable on the pre-metro network around Charleroi. There was a step fitted, to be used to stand still on the high platforms of the pre-metro network (step remaines as on the foto), or to stand still on street level (the step will be turned 90 degrees).

Rolling stock : Goods wagons

Back to list of rolling stock

The NMVB not only transported people. Also the goods transport was important. On the countryside sometime goods transport was more important than passenger transport. The goods transport even lasted longer than passengers transport, when the latter were transported by busses.

Especially in both of the world wars the goods transport of the NMVB has meant a lot for the country. The main railways were destroied heavily, where the NMVB, special in the second world war had only little damage. In the war time the NMVB transported many goods, and has meant a lot in making food available for the people.

In 1970 the last goods tram could be seen in Belgium.

Because of this transport the NMVB ordered a large number of goods wagons. The total number of coaches exceeded the 10.000, of different types.

Below you can se some examples of goods wagons as being used by the NMVB:

A closed goods wagon. There were different type of closed wagons, depending of the type of product that had to be transportd. Wagons for small articles, for vegetables, for animals, and many other types of transport were available. The standard wagon, as can be seen on this picture, could carry 10 tons.

An open goods wagon. These wagons could be used for transport of products which needed not to be inside a coach. Pees, sand, wood and other products could be transported. A standard coach as on this picture could transport 10 tons.

A special type of goods wagon, the coupling wagon. It was used on 4-track railways as in Merksem and in Mol, where goods wagons of the main railway were taken over the (narrow gauge) tramrails to an industrial area or sandmining area. The normal gauge goods wagons rode over the outer rails (1435 mm gauge), the locomotive rode over the inner rails (1000 mm or 1067 mm gauge). The 4 rails can be seen on the foto. The special couplin wagon had buffers for main railway wagons, and buffers for the coupling with the tram locomotive.

Rebuilding from AR to ART

Shortly after the second worldwar, there was a need to stop with steam traction. The NMVB took the older autorails and rebuilded them so that they were able to pull goods wagons. To do so, there were several adaptions:

  • the weight was extended to the maximum which was allowed (about 18 tonnes on two axles)
  • some tractors were rebuilt as light weight tractor (only 15 tonnes)
  • the gear was changed, so that with the cost of a lower maximum speed, the pulling force was highened
  • the old benzin motor (for so far still in use) was changed to a more powerful dieslmotor
  • some autorails got the Westinghouse brake

The rebuilding was done in the workshops of the NMVB themselves. Below you find a list of the autorails which were rebuilded:

Electric motor coaches; rebuilt as tyhpe S / SE / SO

At time of rebuilding, a new steel body was built on the old truck, sometimes of old wooden motorwagons, sometimes of old steel motorwagens. As the body was new, the look of the motorwagons changed very much. For the time they were very modern. The number of the motorwagon remained often the same as the old number, but also in some occasions there was taken another number of some other motorwagon which was at the same time in the depot because of being rebuilt.

The rebuilding was being done by depot Kuregem.

type S   : new standard wagon
type SE : standard used in Brussels
type SO : special built for group Oostende.

Electric motor coaches; renumbering

[ type SO ] [ type S ] [ type Pre-Metro ] [ type SJ ]

In the year 1976 all existing electric trams were renumbered. The numbers were chosen so, that all trams of a certain group were in the same range. Only remained only the groups of Oostende (coast line), Brussels (lines to Wemmel and Grimbergen), and Charleroi.
The trams which were remaining in the group of Antwerp were brought to the group of Brussel, and the trams of the group Mons were incorporated in the group of Charleroi.

Around 1970, when the pre-metro works around Charleroi started, there was a need for trams with a special entrance (one movable step) in order to halt on pre-metro stations (with a high platform) and on street-level. These special trams were rebuilt in the depot Jumet and renumbered (type SJ, Standard Jumet).

Trams of type SO (standard Oostende) :
